Strengthening our communities through active living

A healthy community is a thriving community. We believe in encouraging health, wellness, and an active lifestyle across the regions where we operate. To achieve this goal, we invest in local medical care, health awareness activities, and wellness programs to support the welfare and resilience of our surrounding communities. Not only do we want to provide the best working conditions and work environment for our people, but also promote the overall wellbeing of our employees and the larger community.

GILDAN GLOW DANCE AND GILDAN GLOW RUN

With more than 2,000 people attending every year, our Gildan Glow Dance event in Nicaragua helps raise funds for the Nicaraguan Commission for Childhood Cancer Assistance (CONANCA), an organization that has dedicated almost three decades towards helping children with cancer. CONANCA has also shared a community partnership with Gildan since 2009. During this annual event, employees from our San Marcos, Rivas, and Annic facilities bring their families to participate in Zumba dances and show their charitable enthusiasm during an evening of dance. While raising funds for CONANCA, the event simultaneously motivates people to get on the dance floor and reap dance’s physical and mental health benefits.

The Gildan Glow Run is a 5k run event that is held at our manufacturing centers in Honduras and the Dominican Republic and it has become one of the most anticipated events across our communities over the years, bringing value for our people as well as heightening engagement amongst our employees. All funds raised from the Gildan Glow Run are donated to health and education programs in the communities where we operate. In addition, Gildan employees and their families are encouraged to take part in the run and get moving!

Supporting Variety, the Children’s Charity in Barbados

Variety, the Children’s Charity offers assistance to children in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean who are ill or who have physical or mental disabilities, aiming to improve the medical care given to them as well as the quality of their lives overall.

In June, our team in Barbados participated in the organization’s annual Row for Charity fundraiser. Preparation for this race began months in advance, and committed employees regularly made their way to the beach in order to develop their rowing skills and build a stronger bond as a team. On the day of the event, over 30 employees brought their team spirits and paddled together towards the finish line.

Scholar Athlete of the Year Award in the U.S.

Sponsored by Gildan, this scholarship is given to a Rockingham County student to help fulfil their dreams and further their skills in a sport of their choice. The award is presented to a high school senior that has played at least two sports during their junior and senior year, made all-conference twice during their junior and/or senior year, maintained a GPA of at least 3.5, and did not get expelled from an athletic contest during their junior or senior year. The award is presented during the Rockingham County School’s Athletic Champions Banquet and allows the student to continue following their passion at an age where academics often take precedence over other life pursuits. The award places an emphasis on sports that encourages students to continue playing and maintain an active lifestyle.

Centraide Cup in Canada

In Canada, a group of volunteers from our Corporate Office in Montreal participates in the Centraide Cup, a two-day soccer tournament to raise funds for Centraide, which is an organization in Montreal whose mission is to help break the cycle of poverty and social exclusion. Participants get a break from their day jobs and are motivated to get active, while also raising funds for the larger Montreal community.

Gynathon in Barbados

Our team in Barbados participated in the 2019 Gynathon, a fundraiser event for research and treatment of gynecological cancers. This 5k event raises funds which go towards assisting with the screening and treatment of gynecological cancers in Barbados. Close to 15 Gildan employees came out in support of this worthy cause, and the Company itself served as a platinum sponsor and contributed USD $20,000 to the Barbados Cancer Society.
